3 Quality Engineering Takeaways from the Wall Street Journal

Effective quality engineering is still attainable in spite today’s fragmented digital world that you need to manage. Dow Jones is a company that has mastered Quality Engineering by integrating crowdtesting into its internal operations and benefited from the increased flexibility that it provides.

Applause hosted a webinar with Dow Jones’ Engineering Director, Sumeet Mandloi, who brings more than 18 years of experience in QA, test automation, and product and release management to his position at Dow Jones.

Mandloi shared how Dow Jones has evolved its family of brands, including the Wall Street Journal, to keep pace with rapidly emerging technologies – like VR, AR, and IoT – that have turned the media industry upside down.

Three topical takeaways that we gathered from this webinar include:

1) The essential components of quality engineering are flexibility and automated testing

Establishing a quality engineering process that strikes the right balance between automated and manual testing is essential in order to quickly respond to business needs. Mastering this balancewill enable you to easily manage any and all reactive development tasks while taking on aggressive proactive goals that move the business forward.

2) Effective Quality Engineering goals extend beyond engineering teams

Mandloi laid out Dow Jones’ five overarching Quality Engineering goals that drive its approach to delivering a consistently excellent experience across its entire family of brands, and emphasized the importance of partnering the business side of the house. He also shared key concepts to keep in mind when setting your own objectives.

3) Crowdtesting enhances the capabilities of internal Product & Engineering teams

Mandloi spelled out in detail how Dow Jones has built crowdtesting into each sprint, and provided specific coverage metrics that his team has been able to achieve with the extended reach.

Crowdtesting can be built into any engineering team’s existing development cadence, and enables teams to operate with a follow-the-sun workflow that ultimately reduces time to market.

Ultimately, Dow Jones was able to cover more than 750 device combinations across 70 different countries through crowdtesting, and benefit from this additional layer of QA by minimizing the number of defects reaching its readership in production.
